I love modeling, but of course, I have my life outside of posing and 'walking the walk'.
Before I left for Mumbai I was apprehensive about not being able to continue on with my other passions in life. My rock climbing, for example, is something that I cannot live without. I was worried about leaving because rock climbing has not become a prominent sport in India as of yet. In Canada, climbing is a part of my daily life and something that brings me great joy. The day before I left for my trip, my friends asked me what I wanted to do; naturally I replied "rock climbing of course!"
So how do you cope not being able to do some of your biggest loves when traveling? My first suggestion is to find something new and exciting to fall in love with. Now, I say this, but honestly for me, nothing can fill my climbing void. That brings me to my next option, which is to research and improvise. At first when I moved in to our beautiful apartment, I was set up in a bunk bed. Typically bunk beds get a fair amount of bad rep. But I thought I would use this bunk bed to its full potential. The bunk bed had bars on the top bunk, which I quickly turned into
monkey bars to continue my training. I used them in place of rocks to mimic the sort of muscles that would be used in a climbing scenario. I also would do floor exercises that catered to climbing, so as not to lose all of the strength I had built up. Still, I was on the search for a proper climbing experience.
Now when you love something as much as I love climbing, you typically bring it up in day-to-day conversation. So whenever I meet someone new, my usual topic at hand is climbing. Eventually this became my saving grace! At one of my jobs I had mentioned to the photographer that although I was loving my trip, I was having trouble adjusting to not having ready access to rock climbing. Now typically when I mention the sport here in India, I am confronted with quizzical looks of "rock climbing? I thought only crazy people did that? You do this for fun?" This time, however, I was lucky enough to be met with, "Really that's pretty cool, I have a friend who loves it to!" This is how I found a way to enable my obsession. Is it everything like it was back home? No. But it has been one of the best things I have here. It is rather far and takes an adventure just to get to the wall -but like modeling, when you are passionate about something, no matter where in the world you are, you will be able to find a way to make your passions happen.
